interesting.....so even if we left the server w/ an old version we could install the current version on the client and all should be fine?

Why would you want to leave the server at the old version???

Yes, there is no tie in between the two versions. From Day 1 MQ has negotiated everything it needs to know between the two versions across the channel and client protocols. There is no need for Qmgrs that are connected to be the same version, nor is there any need for clients to be the same version as the queue managers they connect to. Clients can be higher or lower versions than the queue manager.

Cheers,
Morag

MQ 7.x, 8.0, 9.0, 9.1 and 9.2 compatibility with previous versions

MQ 7.x, 8.0, 9.0, 9.1 and 9.2 queue managers and clients inter operate with queue managers and clients from any previous level of the WebSphere MQ or IBM MQ products.

This means that ...

- An MQ client at 7.0, 7.1, 7.5, 8.0, 9.0, 9.1 and 9.2 can connect to all queue managers, non-version 7, as well as version 7.0, 7.1, 7.5, 8.0, 9.0, 9.1 and 9.2.

awesome thank you very much for the help!

and i'm with you all on thinking its smarter to get current. however I only handle the desktop side of things so staying out of that battle

so just so i can build a little flexibility around this, does anymone mind sharing the triggers to install the base client silent? i found that if i install it manually once i can get a client ini file that you can use as a template and also you can use a transforms file but not quite sure how to build that w/ this client. just thinking if i can convince them to let me get current that would help expedite things.
