We are using IIB V10 on AIX. We have a message flow to handle some over night batch type request. The message flow receive several messages (anywhere from 1 to 10) throughout the night from an external vendor to do the work. But the external vendor is very unreliable. Sometime they stop sending us messages after sending 1 or 2 and the work is not completed when we come in in the morning. The development team is working on providing a work completed indicator so that we can be alerted if the indicator is not there say 5 am in the morning and take some action. Meanwhile we are looking at doing some monitoring before the fix is available. The message flow is doing web service call and MQ output. We expect the message flow to do work on and off throughout the night. If no activity is detected more than an hour or two, something is definitely wrong. We understand that we still can not tell if the work is completed, This is better than doing nothing. One way we can think of is using Tivoli to monitor output Q activity. if there is no activity on the output Q for a period of time, we can do an alert. I was wondering if anyone has similar problem and have done something different or if there is any other suggestion on how we can handle this.
There are several ways to monitor a queue for the activity.
One of the simple method is to store the last message put time in a cache and have a program to check with the current timestamp and you can define the alert based on the time difference that you would like to configure
If you are looking for full fledged alert monitoring, you can evaluate BMC,
or "contact admin monitoring too" for such features as it would come with dash board where one can monitor.
