Or, is z/OS just an easy target for humor - like basement-dwelling millennials?

No. Just that white-on-black in a presentation wastes people's time - as well as toner - ... regardless of the source.

Reports of it's demise are truly fake news.

But unlike basement-dwelling millennials, it comes from a deep seated sense of inferiority and envy from the non-z/OS community that covet the dependability, reliability and scalability that only comes from the finest OS ever created. Where research and development have focused on improvements to the platform, not the graphical interface. The world of 32 bit color, dancing widgets and mouse interactive buttons is all very well, but z/OS continues to hum away in the background, calmly keeping the world moving has it has for decades. In a limited but efficient range of tones.

Or basement-dwelling gen-xers or greedy yuppies, or stoner hippies or or or....

But as to zed, I suspect that people make fun of it because of the hand-cranked starter on the side of the hardware...

Which is fine because you only use it every 3 or 4 years when you think you should probably do a cold start for form's sake.

Electronic ignition is clearly needed on *NIX because you restart it so often. And keyless start on Windoze because otherwise you'd be up and down all day.

Anyway, back to the question..

black on white or white on black? (for some value of "black" and "white" that doesn't mean the direct opposite, i.e. "black" == white and "white == black)

Full disclosure (to prevent comments from people who know where I work):

The standard described is the "meeting" style, intended for presentations shared via WebEx or on the screen of a meeting room. There is a "presentation" style, intended for use in meetings where the presentation is projected onto a screen in a darkened auditorium. It's the same as I described, but has a black or dark blue background with white text.

I think this underlines and reinforces the very valid points made here: low contrast presentations are a pain in the eyes, the head and eventually the neck.

We don't print things any more, so the waste of toner (or tiner) from a dark-background presentation is moot for us.

The other factor the young upstarts forget is that us oldies (but golden) have vastly different eyes to them. putting things into 8pt and expecting someone to read it....
Almost as bad as the white on white that was used when a former employer revealed their financials to a hostile bidder. The data was there but you had to select the text to see it.
Oh the games people play....

I was training a new-to-CICS user on how to fill in fields on a BMS screen. She asked if the data on disk was actually green. I'm not often stumped for a reply ...

There's lots of font/background color combinations, some better than others for sure. Bazinga.

I, too, prefer white background. Much easier to read. Nearly impossible to highlight on black background.

Agree. A black background might be OK in a very dark room, but we live in a world of light. Black holes invite doom.

The worst possible combination is red on blue, or blue on red. These are at opposite ends of the wavelength spectrum. The lenses in our eyes are not designed to tightly focus both these colors on to the retina at the same time. aka Chromatic aberration. Not everyone sees all the colors same.

color blindness affects approximately 1 in 12 men (8%) and 1 in 200 women in the world. Large proportion have Reg Green deficiency but Blues look all ok.

1 of my family members, who in others' view used to pick all weird colors every time he goes out to shopping realized at ~age20+ that he has colorblindness as he failed the Ishihara test.

That's a great point.
It's definitely something to consider when putting screen shots of command shells on presentations...

And even more important to consider for the actual presentation text itself... "This red line on the graph indicates the speed of deployments as we changed tools and procedures, and the blue line indicates the change in deployment errors... "

This has me pondering whether a zebra is a white animal with black stripes, a black animal with white stripes, or an invisible animal with black & white stripes.

They're actually brown, they just look black from a distance...
