Am I correct in deducing that this means the server end did not recognise that the connection had been dropped, since it appears no attempts were made to restart it from that end.

Or didn't respond in a way the client recognized.

You have to get your head around exactly how out of date that v5.3 software is. The 6.0 version was a significant revision.

Also IBM guarantees backwards compatibility with all older supported versions. So the v7.5.0.5 is absolutely not supported with a v5.3 server, will never have been tested with a v5.3 server and whoever took the business risk of not moving of v5.3 needs to be told his gamble just failed, ideally just before they're sacked for massive levels of incompetence.

Seriously. If you were still using a truck from the 1950s (that wasn't going to be replaced because it still ran fine) people would ask about how you were going to get parts if it did fail and wouldn't be surprised if the trailer kept slipping off and needed to be reattached because the fittings didn't quite line up. They'd also be suggesting strongly that you get a new truck with a modern hitch.

You may also want to look into the differences with following channel pairings:

SERVER - REQUESTER
SENDER - REQUESTER

Looks to me you are looking for the behavior of a Sender-Requester pairing more than that of a Server-Requester...

IIRC the conname on the Server channel acts as a call back to the requester part. So the Requester still needs to initiate the connection...

Have fun
