you can assign the namespace AND the value all at the same time. Look at the CREATE statement, it has NAMESPACE , NAME and VALUE clauses, amongst other things.

Sure but as he is trying to assign a default namespace, he will still have to walk the tree to assign the namespace to the children and below...

Default namespace or not, all elements in an XMLNSC tree need to have a namespace attached. Or they aren't part of any namespace.

I think this is one of the hardest lessons for those new to namespaces to learn.

They mix up the namespace assigned to a field with the prefix (or lack thereof) for that field.

I shudder when dealing with another team or a vendor where they complain about what the namespace prefix is or that it is changing depending on who is sending the request. We then have to explain that they are logically equivalent and that any XML parser should not care.

And that they should never write code that cares about what the prefix is...

We then have to explain that they are logically equivalent and that any standards compliant XML parser should not care

There fixed it for you.

We have seen cases here where people are using 'homegrown XML' parsers that are distinctly 'iffy' when it comes to standards.

Every time you reinvent the wheel the more square it gets (anon). If in doubt think and investigate before you ask silly questions.
