I have this doubt for a long time..But not sure where to post this query..
Thought posting under General discussion in this forum would help me..
I recently entered into some API management tools(such as IBM API management,APIGEE etc,.) after working for a while in Websphere message broker.
I could see these API management tools can do whatever Datapower is doing and these are also placed in front of backend services to protect the backend servers.Moreover these tools has some features such as Monetisation by which these tools are seen beyond Datapower.
But recently had a discussion with a Datapower expert and she told that some thrid party tools can be plugged with Datapower which enables it to do even API monetisation.
So,what makes Datapower unique?Or is it fair to compare Datapower with API management tools as its competitors?If yes, why IBM itself brought in a tool named IBM API management? |

IBM don't consider Datapower an API Management tool or, as you correctly point out, they wouldn't have a separate tool for API Management. Now given that the IBM API Management appliance is built on a Datapower chassis I can easily believe that a 3rd party vendor could produce something that plugged in front of or behind Datapower and did the same thing as the IBM API Management tool.
So for API Management (and I include monetization in this) pick your horse and ride it. Datapower itself isn't in that space.

Assume that you have two mobile app developers (zynga.com and king.com) that reside outside your organization. They use API's /makePayment and /getCurrentLocation that are already built and exposed by your enterprise. After a few weeks, you want to check how many users have used an API called /makePayment and how many users have used an API called /getCurrentLocation. You'd like to understand what % of invocations have only called /getCurrentLocation and what % of users have called both API's in conjunction.

DataPower prides itself more as a security and an integration appliance. It is meant for integration teams to integrate with other teams that might have proprietary interface (Files, MQ, REST or SOAP web services)
Using DataPower you have to build all the reporting capabilities as well as the security infrastructure needed to make all of the use cases happen. There are no pre-built charting, on-boarding and off-boarding facilities available out of the box in the appliance.
