Hi All,

Has anyone done a performance analysis to compare mapping node Vs compute node in WMB 8.0.0.4. I am seeing a CPU (100%) spike when I use mapping node for substring and arithmetic operations.

Since mapping node is the native for mapping operations, is it good to use ESQL instead since I am seeing these CPU spikes.

Any suggestions or recommendations by anyone who has done some research in the past using WMB 8.0.0.4 would be appreciated. I am not having enough time to do a performance check with mapping Vs compute nodes.

Thanks!

ESQL is every bit as "native" as the mapping node, and can be argued to be more native as it's been around longer. It's accepted that substring (and indeed any string) operations are expensive in WMB and I would assert that a substring operation that causes a 100% CPU spike in the mapping node will probably cause a high (possibly 100%) CPU spike in ESQL.

There has been any amount of discussion in this forum on the use of the Mapping node v the ESQL node v the Java node, and in basic terms the performance is at least comparible; it's on this I base my assertion that whatever you've coded in the mapping node will perform equally badly if recoded in ESQL.

If this is a serious enough problem for you, you'll make time. In my view (which legitimately is not your view) a 100% CPU spike is not a problem unless it interfers with something else running on the box or affects the SLA of the flow in question.
