maybe show us output from "display clusqmgr(*) all" and "display qcluster(name of your cluster queue) all from all participating queuemanagers A, B and C ?

Delete all qmgrs in this cluster; then recreate the cluster by carefully following well-documented procedures in WMQ Clusters manual. Do not attempt any tuning efforts.

Then run your tests again.

Thats not a viable option Bruce!!!We cannot delete all the qmgrs in a client's environment as it ll hamper the applications.

Based on those dumps, it looks like all three queue managers are repositories.

While I believe [from previous discussions/rants/mantras] it is feasible to do this, it requires special care. Your scenario does not need all three queue managers to be repositories for what you are trying to do.

I would pick one of the queue managers, knock it down to a non-repository queue manager (making the necessary channel changes), and see if your results change.

MQ Cluster load balancing is not done at the queue level, its done at the channel level.

So, if QM1 is being used to send messages to QM2A and QM2B, its quite possible that one day load balancing works perfectly well sending 50/50 to MY.QUEUE which is defined on QM2A and QM2B.

Then one day YOUR.ROTTON.QUEUE is defined on QM2A only. QM1 is used to get message to this queue too. Messages for MY.QUEUE and YOUR.ROTTON.QUEUE are flowing thru QM1, looking for a place to go. But because the volume of messages going to YOUR.ROTTON.QUEUE is quite high, QM1 sees that the channel to QM2A is much busier. When it has a message to put to MY.QUEUE, it will send them down the less used channel to QM2B.

If you disable MQ.QUEUE on QM2B, the cluster then sends to MY.QUEUE on QM2A, even though its busier, because its the only valid target for MY.QUEUE at that time.

This is how MQ cluster load balancing can be working fine one day for Application #1, and thru no fault of Application #1, another application can be added to the mix and things stop working like they used, although they are technically working as designed.


On your sending QM, what your channel sequence numbers on your cluster sender channels. If you see the numbers rising faster to QM2A than to QM2B, that could be the reason why load balancing for lower volume queues are being sent down the QM2B channel more than you would think they should be if you are expecting 50/50 load balancing.
