You need to make the changes shown here.

Note that these are the minimums; you might well want to consider more depending on how the install is to be used.

Unless you already meet the minimums laid out in the documentation. Which is perfectly possible.

Ok, pedantically you don't need to make any changes to do the installation. It's just that there's a very good change any queue manager you create won't work properly or at all if you don't.

So it's a bit pointless not.

You are correct.
I faced one interview and they asked question like as below.

What are the Operating system files we beed to edit before starting MQ installtion, which means to complete MQ installtion successfully?

Answered like : none of the file

Could you please tell how can youanswer of this question?

Thanks,
Ramesh

I believe there isn't a definitive answer, from the Infocenter:

"RPM creates the mqm user ID and group ID as part of the install procedure if they do not exist. You might need to create the IDs before running the installation procedure."

You need to create a user and a group, this is done during installation, but in fact you are changing a file.

Yes there is, and there's at least 1 file you need to edit explicitly which the InfoCenter talks about.

No. We don't do interview questions here.

All you need is in the InfoCenter.

Hmm, ok!
I did a few installations and don't remember editing a file... I need to re-read the Infocenter

There are a number of sys admin tasks to prepare for MQ installation which may result in OS files being changed, eg. kernel parameters, userid & group creation, file system creation, initd config & scripts to auto start the qmgrs.

But as far as mandatory OS files to edit before running the rpm installation, I don't think there are any mandatory files. If the kernel parameters are OK, there would be no need to edit /etc/sysctl.conf. I recently did a Linux MQ install and didn't edit any OS files *before* doing the install.

Yes gbaddeley, you are correct.
There is no mandatory files to edit, we have to edit file to change perameter values as per our requirment.

Thanks,
Ramesh

But it is mandatory to check /etc/sysctl.conf (nice fish!) to check the values. As I said above, they may well be above the minimums needed already.

Another good answer to this question would be to refer to the Quick Beginnings manual for the platform, AND for this version of WMQ to be installed.

As an interviewer, I want to know that the interviewee knows how and where to search for things.

Trick question? There are no mandatory OS files to edit, but there might be a need to edit OS files (eg kernel parameters if they are below the minimum recommended values).
