This item has been idle for about a year now. I just posted a possible resolution to the (much younger) post of "Millions of messages loaded into SYSTEM.MANAGED.DURABLE.XXXX"

Inside the "queues" directory should only be directories representing queues - your 21 ghost directories seem to be permanent dynamic queues representing the durable subscriptions I wrote about in that other post.

(I am theorizing here, it would be nice if you could verify this).

Ahhh.... Permanent dynamic queues!. These need to be cleared up by the MQ Admin. Probably on a regular basis... (I'd say using mqsc)... and after having removed the durable subscription that writes to them...

Have fun

What if the durable subscriber comes back and wants its messages?

My understanding was that in his case it was caused by a problem with MQExplorer, and in case of a return a new subscription would have been created. In my experience it is never a clear cut administration when you deal with permanent dynamic queues. The application needs to have a way of storing the names of the queues it needs and/or creates and a way to clean up after itself.

Any other design creates a proliferation of queues that then lie unused, and a cleanup nightmare for the MQ Admin...

So if the durable subscriber comes back and wants its message, you should not have a proliferation of permanent dynamic queues, or it should ask for the subscription to be delivered to a regular permanent queue!

Just my 2 cents...
