Agree. I didn't count too many people agreeing we had a Problem that needs fixing. All I'd say is
- please don't make it difficult for people to offer help
- please don't make it difficult for people to ask for help

Agreed. And on the flip side, I would just follow that with:

- Please don't make it difficult for people to help

So is the decision then, that either moderators or others will speak up when they feel someone is being unnecessarily unprofessional?

It's good to see alot of people taking an interest in this post....

Some good points being rasied by most...

even though some people couldn't resist in re-enforcing some points I rasied in the original post....

As always this is a difficult area to control without imposing unnecessary restrictions... After all this is an open forum....

I think it just comes down to people(all) being more professional in their posts....

One idea I have for newbies is, maybe when people join before they can post they are made to read a post or statement along the lines of the Sticky " How to ask qustions the smart way" once they have read this they are enabled to allow them to post? Just an idea....

And if someone posts a question, where they can easily get the answer for themselves elsewhere, a simple response of please read the sticky "How to ask questions the smart way?" should be enough?

anyway... back to work and many thanks to all the responses and lets hope it makes people think before posting....

Please see my post a while back, extoling the virtues of this sticky.

If nothing else, could a link to this thread be incorporated in the "Welcome to MQSeries.net" email? There is an email isn't there? It was all so long ago...

Someone that won't type "IBM MQ 2059" into google is going to read a 4 page post on the topic of asking questions?

Gun laws and locked doors (and "How do I post questions" info) are only respected by the people that you don't have to worry about in the first place......

There are to many emoticons now IMHO, especially the animated ones. I bet the intent of most of them goes right over the heads of the people that are being replied too.

by chance i came across this 1+ year ago set of posts.

wondering if it can still be a see / saw advocate of sorts - an attempt to get a more recent sense of general forums' membership views and perspectives on items like : usefeulness, drawbacks, newbie questions, new forum nominations to be added, items forums would benefit from, user suggestions for improvments, the challenge forum, emoticons usage, ...

please feel free to add and share your personal views and commentary.

ps: (could have used an existing seesaw emotiocn but left it be)

I feel strongly that the forum is open enough and self-correcting/self-policing enough.

Those that opt to abuse it/us are quickly smacked (with trout).

Newbies are most often nudged to provide more useful details and to do more research, and to do some experimenting. This is consistent with real-world growth and development.

Considering that most of us contribute for the love of the product, we're doing just fine.
