Hi All,

I would like to say a very big thank you to everyone who has purchased MQ Visual Edit and to those who have helped me with the support MQ Visual Edit. Yesterday, the 1000th (one thousandth) license for MQ Visual Edit was sold. In just less than 2 years, MQ Visual Edit has attained what I consider a very respectable goal.

A little over three years ago, while at a client site, I found that I did not have a 'message editor', a necessary tool. As you know, this frequently occurs when you are on a consulting assignment. So, I decided that it was time that I created one for my tool-chest. Several colleagues said they needed one too, which lead to the thought that maybe I had a useful product and so I created a beta program for MQ Visual Edit. After many, many beta rounds, I decided that it was ready for primetime and I launched MQ Visual Edit v1.0 on November 1st, 2003.

The last 2 years have been an interesting ride: new product development, customer support, a vendor at T&M Conference, etc… For those who know me, you must see humor in the customer support aspect. (i.e. bull in a china shop. ) Capitalware has had an interesting metamorphosis in the last 2 years from a 100% services company to a company that is equally divided between services and product sales. Amazingly, I am up to 5 commercial products for MQ.

Now to the future: what do I have planned for Capitalware?

1) Certify all products for MQ v6.0 (a little slowed because of a problem with a new AIX server)

2) New enhancements for MQ Visual Edit. I am rewriting MQVE's interval message handling so that it will be extensible (a little unplanned but hey). This will allow MQVE to manipulate any MQ message type (i.e. RFH2 creation). The extensible messaging framework will lead to some interesting future enhancements. Yes, I am adding a couple of new features for this release of MQVE.

3) Finish porting / testing of the security products (MQSSX & MQAUSX) for z/OS and zLinux.

4) For the very end of the year, I would like to release a beta version of a new product. I have written 3.5 components of the 5 that I would like to see. I have them running stand-alone but I need to wrap them in a framework. It is not another message editor or monitoring tool or configuration tool, I don't how to slot it: how about a collection of missing tools for MQ. I'll tentatively aim for a Christmas launch date for the free beta.

Now to the very frequently asked questions:

1) Yes. There will be a new release of MQ Visual Edit in this quarter and it will cover almost all of the currently requested features.

2) No. I absolutely have no plans on selling my products or company to another company. I like being my own boss. I like being able to choose what I create and when I create it. This is what I've always wanted, so why would I give it up.

3) I have no plans on creating any n-tier monitoring or configuration tools. My focus is squarely on robust, stand-alone tools that fill MQ niches. I want to (and will) create rich MQ tools and sell them at a reasonable price. If I can be known as the Wal-Mart or Amazon of the MQ space then I will be a happy-camper.

So, onwards and upwards; next stop 10,000 licenses sold for MQ Visual Edit.

Regards,
Roger Lacroix

Congrats Roger!
I would like to think that MQSeries.net played a little part in getting the word out on your great tool. That and me handing out Visual Edit flyers at the conference in Vegas

Well, its bigger than a pen and smaller than a bread box.

Sadly it took me far, far longer to port MQAUSX & MQSSX to WMQ v6.0 than I ever expected. I use gcc on all platforms and to get the right compile and link options for a couple of 64-bit platforms caused me to pull almost all of my hair out!!! Plus in November both of my consulting clients had major deployments including one time on the same weekend. On Saturday afternoon during the double deployments, I was on the land-line with one client and on cell phone with the other client discussing their respective MQ problems (or perceived MQ problems). Needless to say, I need a vacation.

Thankfully I have successfully completed the upgrading and testing MQAUSX & MQSSX for WMQ v6.0 and it is out the door. (Although I did have moments when I didn't think it was possible!!)

Hence, I am far, far behind in getting the next release of MQ Visual Edit (& MQ Visual Browse) out the door and of course that goes without saying I am far behind on my new toy.

The new toy is be called: MQ Visual Spyder

MQ Visual Spyder is a getter/collector of information for the user. I was going to call it: MQ Visual Butler but I like the idea of a spider and its long legs and the word Spy. Hence, MQ Visual Spyder.

It is a collection of small applications or mini-projects that I have built to analyze what is going on with MQ in real-time. Real-time is the key word.

The working components so are:
- Publish / Subscribe activity viewer for the included free MQ pub/sub stuff
- Visual Validator (checks channels, queues, processes, etc for mis-configured / missing stuff)
- Visual Event Viewer
- Visual Queue Depth Viewer (like the Performance tab for the Task manager on Windows.) - very colorful and it was interesting playing with 2D graphics.
- Visual Queue Status Viewer shows a table of IPPROCS, OPPROCS, Queue depth, puts per ?, and gets per ? (where ? is the interval) This information is stored in the local Derby database for future review.
- Visual Security viewer shows the current security setting (OAM - ACL) of the queue manager (local or remote). hopsala probably is interested in this.

I.e. You can validate 1 queue manager or all queue managers with a single click.

I'm trying to figure out how to do a topology viewer for it. I.e. Have it snoop all queue managers and collect all channel information and then build a topology map of all the queue mangers and what other queue managers they connect to. This is a lot harder than it sounds.

I was going to have an open beta for it (when it is ready that is) but a few weeks ago, I received an email from an auditor at very large North American retailer asking me about support for MQ Visual Edit beta v0.4, MQ Visual Edit beta v0.5 and MQ Visual Edit beta v0.6.

Besides the fact the those releases were betas AND they expired more than 2 years old, the beta tester(s) was/were suppose to remove it from their system when it expired as per the license to be a beta testers. Obviously, they find value in the product but they too cheap or too lazy to pay $99 for it is simply shocking.

So, I have decided that I will not offer an open public beta for it. I will offer a closed beta program (i.e. user will sign a SELA). You might say I am over reacting but their was another much larger incident about a year ago (never made public). I had to bulk up on lawyers and go after the top dogs of the company to protect my stuff. (For Texas Hold-Em lovers, I went 'All In'.) That's when I stopped offering the Java version of my programs as a free download.

I'll let everyone know when the beta is ready. I would really like to have people who use use Pub/Sub give MQ Visual Spyder a spin.
